Introduction I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2001. The symptoms, controlled with medication, were fairly benign until 2009. During the last year, Parkinson’s has tightened its grip on me. I feel as though a little drunk guy got into my brain’s control room. He pulls muscles when they should relax and refuses to pull muscles when I want them to tighten. So, my legs sometimes freeze when I try to walk. This causes me to fall. On the other hand, when I try to relax, muscles tighten into cramped knots. My fingers feel wooden. I’ve lost the dexterity required to write. I’m typing this with one finger. More and more, walking is reduced to the Parkinson’s shuffle. Without intervention, I would be in a wheelchair before long, facing the grim prospect of sliding deeper and deeper into a painful, paralyzed existence where one by one, normal subconscious bodily actions; digestion, tears, breathing, saliva etc. are compromised until rescued by death. Words cannot express the tremendous gratitude I have for God’s mercy and the dedicated people who work tirelessly to develop these miraculous procedures.
