| Introduction | A free range chicken is not in the coop 24/7 and it has to grub for its own food. Similarly, I am between assignments right now, and thinking that being bi-vocational may be the way of the future for me; that would pretty much put me outside of "the coop" and leave me grubbing for food as well. Why bi-vocational? At my last church, I was a high school XC and track coach as well as a pastor, and eventually I got to where I'd introduce myself as a coach instead of as a pastor. Want a great way to kill a conversation? When introduced to a stranger, tell them that you are a pastor. (100% guaranteed to end the conversation 70% of the time.) There are plenty of other reasons to be bi-vocational, but trying to bridge the gap between myself and the people I want to reach is a big one. |
