IntroductionMs. Schroeder applied for the NOAA Teacher at Sea in the fall of 2009. On March 2nd, she received an email notifying her of her selection in the program. There were 250 US teacher applications; 35 teachers were selected, and only 2 were from Florida. On March 12th she selected her cruise location; Dutch Harbor (Unalaska), Alaska. Her cruise will depart on May 6th for 11 days on the Bering Sea. "Unalaska, the 11th largest city in Alaska, is a bustling community of about 4,000 residents located along the Aleutian Chain, approximately 800 miles southwest of Anchorage. Dutch Harbor, the official name of the city's port, is often applied to the portion of the City of Unalaska located on Amaknak Island, which is connected by bridge to the rest of the community on Unalaska Island." http://unalaska-ak.us/ She will be aboard the NOAA ship Oscar Dyson, which will be studying the relationships between the marine environment and the survival of commercially valuable fish in the western Gulf of Alaska, as well as studying the ecosystems of the North Pacific Ocean and the Bering Sea.
