If mud is dirt plus water, what is clay?
Clay is soil whose particles are plate-like and have a typical grainsize less than 0.075mm where more than 50% of the particles will pass through a No.200 sieve. Water does not readily drain through clayey materials. Some might argue that clay already is mud because of its tendency to attract water. The question, however, should be stated as follows: If mud is soil plus water, what is clay.
