Introduction | Renka is my nom de plume/nom de guerre - depending how I feel on the day. I've always loved writing; starting with poems on the short and tragic life of the Snowdrop with plenty of pathetic fallacy. Moving on to darkly gothic tales for every school English assignment - the actual title didn't matter; I would have a dark, scowling hero, a few vampires, murderous villain and a heroine who did little more than wear good clothes. Teenage angst was explored in poetry - influences were Philip Larkin, the Mersey poets and Saint Bob. These poems are unremittingly awful, but I've kept them to remind me never to write poetry again. I graduated to university essays on Anglo-saxon saucer brooches, carbon dating and medieval floor tiles. This was followed by more essays on cataloguing and classification (oh yes - it got better). For a while my creative energies went into job applications. A friend then bet me that I couldn't write a romantic novel - well I did, but sadly it wasn't published as I was told 'it lacks that unique Mills and Boon flavour' - this was not surprising as I had never read one. |
