Introduction | We’re a group of weavers who completed the 2 year certificate course at the Handweavers and Spinners Guild of Victoria in 2004 and 2007. Together with our teacher, Gerlinde Binning, we meet occasionally and call ourselves the Shakespeare Weavers for no better reason than that the Guild was in Shakespeare St Carlton when we did the course. Some of us thought we would like to start to sell our work and have formed an associated group – Portia’s Cloth. Why Portia’s Cloth? We liked the Shakespearian connection and tradition tells us that Portia was rich. beautiful and intelligent. The only cloth she would have known would have been hand woven and we aspire to produce cloth of the quality she would have known, but with a rather more modern twist |
