Occupation writer
Location the north country, NY
Introduction Until relatively recently, I, like most New Yorkers, thought that anything north of Westchester County was "upstate." I thought New York's northern-most point was Lake George. Sure, I'd heard of exotic places like Syracuse, Rochester and Buffalo, but I had always doubted their existence. I remember looking at them on maps in earth science in ninth grade and thinking they were just small dots on a map I could never bother to learn. Imagine my surprise when I discovered the north country - even farther north than those mapped dots. I took a job here without even knowing exactly where it was. Since then, I have discovered another world. One where people say hello to strangers. And stop for pedestrians. And think nothing of farm stands, haystacks and Amish buggies. Where people never lock their doors and follow the speed limit. And they come up with some of the most hilarious - and ingenious - entertainment I've ever heard of. Welcome to the north country.

That can't really be a fish you're standing on, can it?

No. It's a shell, a la Botticelli's Birth of Venus. Time to get your eyes checked.
