Introduction | I am the daughter of first generation Italian Americans whose immigrant parents struggled to provide good lives for their families. Their hard work paid off: my father was the first in his Brooklyn neighborhood to go to college and topped that by earning a master’s degree in chemistry. My mother excelled in school and raised my sisters and me with a work ethic that would make her parents proud. I learned from both of them that a good life comes from always doing your best, cherishing your family, sharing good meals and laughter, and regarding others as you would want to be regarded. From this fertile soil, the Italian Mama grew to be a writer, a teacher, a wife, and mother. When I am not in the kitchen honing my culinary skills (it has been said that my lasagna rivals my mother's), I teach initially reluctant university students to unleash the power of the written word. My husband and I live with our two sons, who teach us at least as much as we teach them. I may be old enough already, but I’m never too old to learn. |
