Introduction	The term "True Point of Beginning" is used in surveying to describe the spot to which all other site delineations ultimately refer. Here I wander around the vast field of ecosystem service politics in the US, hoping to get a bearing back to how and why environmental regulators, conservation NGOs, entrepreneurs, scientists, and others come to treat nature as a service and to what end. I'm a geographer at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
