Why does the taste of pennies remind you of losing a tooth?

Because you taste the metal content. Probably has something to do with electrolysis. I first was thinking of copper, only your blood generally has iron, not copper, and besides, pennies are mostly zinc with a very, very thin cladding (coat) of copper. (The price of copper is expensive enough that the mint would lose money if they continued to make cents out of 100% copper.)
