| Introduction | On 9/12/08, after a routine mammogram/biopsy, I got a call that I had invasive ductal carcinoma. My sister had been diagnosed with the same disease 1 yr earlier, so I had an idea of what was in store for me. I was really scared. After several biopsies,MRIs&dr visits, I was scheduled for a mastectomy & reconstruction on 10/28/08. After surgery, I was told I had 3 tumors, 2 larger than 2 cm, & I was stage IIa. Due to a low oncotype dx score & the cancer not being present in my lymph nodes, I was able to forego chemo/radiation for hormone therapy (tamoxifen). I had 3 more surgeries, due to a severe staph infection then more reconstruction. I have competed in 3 ironman races, 3 TTT races, many ½’s, and 12 marathons. When I started this blog, my goal was to do an ironman in pink as a breast cancer survivor. I did it!! I hope this blog can inspire others who have been recently diagnosed that there is hope and life after you get thru it. Life is really miraculous!! |
