| Introduction | Horses can't speak like we do. It's hard to know what is troubling them. They are flight animals primarily, choosing to run rather than stay and fight. Evolution means they have developed several strategies to cope with life - safety in numbers; vigilance; fear of new things. Everything in a horse's makeup is down to genetics and temperament, and (importantly) experience. Every interaction with your horse has the capacity to be become a learning experience either positive or negative. Unfortunately this can result in strange associations which we can't initially understand, but by working through his story it is possible to understand why a horse behaves in the way he does, and help solve behavioural problems with sympathetic calm training. I like to use rewards based positive reinforcement to show a horse he's right when he acts the way we'd like him to act. It's enjoyable for horse and owner alike, and gets good results. An example is teaching an alternative behaviour such as head lowering when frightened; touching a scary object instead of running away; learning to stand for clipping rather than dancing all over the place; following a target into enclosed spaces like trailers. |
