Cllr Jackie Grunsell
My blogs
| Introduction | I first became involved in local politics when local Health bosses decided to transfer many Huddersfield health services to Calderdale and beyond, threatening vitally needed resources such as maternity care and St Luke’s Hospital. As a local GP, I initiated a huge local campaign called ‘Save Huddersfield NHS’ which collected signatures, organised demos and protests. When the council refused to organise a referendum on the issue I decided to stand as an independent candidate in Crosland Moor and Netherton, where I live, and won with an 800 majority. I have been a sitting councillor since 2006 and am up for re-election this year. My decision to stand again is influenced by two main factors: • The current onslaught on public services, jobs and living standards as a result of the recession brought on by greedy bankers • The failure of the three main political parties to stand up for ordinary working people and to resist the worst excesses of this recession I have refused to accept any expenses as a local councillor and have ‘allowance’ money to support workers and young people in struggle. I am committed to the principle of ‘a workers’ MP on a workers’ wage’. |
