IntroductionAs a professional tour guide, now retired, I am a past president of the Guild of Professional Tour Guides of Washington, DC. In this capacity I attended a conference in January, 2009 of the International Tourist Guide Assns in Bali. Several postings on this blog are from that trip. In 1994 I went to Russia on a travel grant from the National Forum Foundation to work with the Urals Center for Cultural Initiatives. The objective was to help regional cultural organi-zations make the transistion from state funding to a market economy. I also worked with PADCO, a US AID program, on marketing the concept of condominium housing. For 5 yrs I taught principles of marketing and management at Urals State Technical University. As Barbara Crafton of GeraniumFarm.org has said, "All of life changes us, of course, but travel shows us the change suddenly, disconcertingly. You take yourself with you wherever you go, and then you bring yourself back again. But you also bring the places you have gone and the people you have loved back with you when you return, with a permanence you do not expect. You are not the same."
