IntroductionHi, I’m a student at UNCC majoring in International Studies with a minor in Spanish. Everything about creation is beautiful: the sunrise and the sunset, the ocean and the clouds, the leaves of the trees and the branches that hold them, the birds and the squirrels, the grass and the flowers. One specific plant has captivated me more than the rest: the tree. Trees can symbolize so many things. My favorite characteristic about trees is that they are so strong, with many roots like well-diggers bringing up water, many branches like arms to hold climbing children and with leaves that wave as one passes by. To me, an old tree is a father with his arms open wide, waiting to embrace his child. He is full of life, verdant, and warmly rusty. He is solid and able to hold his child above the ground. Beyond trees I enjoy poetry, especially Latin American and Caribbean poetry. The most interesting facet of poetry is that anyone can create a poem. A child that just learned to write can create a poem, as can a man in south Asia, as can a woman in Russia. Anyone can write poetry from their experiences. I am a student and will be all my life. For now, however, it is my profession.
