Introduction I'm a high school science teacher in Gresham, Oregon. I work hard during the school year teaching college biology and sophomore physical science. When vacation finally rolls around, I take off on various adventures either bike touring or backpacking. Last Cookie is the trail name I picked up on the Pacific Crest Trail six years ago while hiking the length of Oregon on the PCT. My old bike, a Trek 7900 I bought in 1995, is named Samwise after Samwise Gamgee in the Lord of the Rings. He got his name on the shores of Lake Superior during my cross country bike ride in 1996. One night, camped by the lake, I was reading Fellowship of the Ring and Frodo kept referring to 'My faithful Sam'. It clicked and my bike became Samwise. He has lived up to his name and has been faithful for about 30,000 miles of bike touring. Unfortunately, last summer old Sam was damaged while getting shipped home. I can still ride him around town but his touring days are over. My new bike is accustom Co-Motion Americano Co-Pilot named Samwise II. It has a coupling system that allows him to be taken apart to fit in a suitcase which makes flying it so much easier.
