About me

Occupation Playground Consultant
Location Perth, WA, Australia
Introduction I grew up in Perth the 1960s and 70s. I loved helping dad in the vegie garden, played outside nearly all the time and was allowed to roam around the suburb, sometime with mates, sometimes on my own! I’ve worked in children & family services, playgroup, child care, inclusion support, family support but have become more and more interested in children's play, particularly outdoor play. The more I’ve researched, the more I believe that typical outdoor play provision of recent decades inhibits quality play and does little to support children’s learning, development, health & wellbeing. I love to share current research, thoughts and trends in our perceptions of childhood, outdoor play and playspace design and hopefully inspire a change in thinking about the Nature of Play. Bernard Spiegal from PLAYLINK UK gave me a great quote: he proposed that our attitudes to and understanding of play act as a sort of litmus test of society’s attitude to children and teens in general and to wider notions of what it is to be an autonomous choice-maker.
Interests Children's play, natural playgrounds, connecting kids with nature
