Introduction	There are many reasons to paint. There is the pleasing, physical sensation, after closely studying and struggling to paint something for hours---a face, a tree---when there's sort of a "pop" and you SEE, oh, it's brown right there! Or, I have it too pointy! I'm not sure why I didn't see it 3 hours ago, but that's okay, because NOW I see it and therefore I feel more in touch with how things really are, as if a veil has lifted. Other reasons: to see the pleasing design out there, the curves and masses, the balance of colors, the rhythm of something repeating and the intriguing variety of shapes. And to feel that all this order is there for our pleasure, when we slow down and look closely.
