Introduction	I am a Physician Assistant student at the University of St. Francis. For my elective rotation I learned about tropical diseases and health care in an outpatient setting working with Dr. Ellen Little. Her clinic was at a resouce center in Kampala, Uganda. We also spent time doing rural clinics in the Torro Kingdom of the West and villages around Jinja. Now I am doing my Family Medicine rotation at Shyira hospital near Ruhengeri, Rwanda. It is a hospital in a rural area with a Maternity ward, men and women's internal medicine ward, Pediatrics ward, health center, lab, HIV counseling and testing, Nutrition Center, Physical Therapy, and Operating Room. The facility was plundered and ruined by the war until four years ago when Dr. Caleb and Dr. Louise King, doctors from Harvard Medical School, moved there to reconstruct the facility. Now it serves the rural hills in the district with a staff of Rwandan nurses and doctors, two Congolese doctors, and a German OB/GYN doctor.
