About me

Introduction Hi, I'm Ruth, and I can nurse a newborn, supervise a toddler, and prep a lesson on Bleak House all at the same time.
I've recently completed a PhD in English literature in northern California, and I'm starting a job teaching English at a boarding school in Massachusetts.

I had my first child, Maggie, in May of 2011 while working on my dissertation. Turns out that writing a dissertation with a baby strapped to your chest is, in fact, possible. Things were going so swimmingly that we decided to have baby #2 just before I graduated in spring of 2013. Baby #2 turned out to be twins-- surprise! Tom and Kate were born about 4 weeks early, in late February of 2013.

My partner in all of this, Andrew, is an analytical chemist, homebrewer, bread baker, late-night diaper changer, toddler wrangler, and one hell of a nice guy.

This blog is my brain-dump. I might post articles about feminism, or I might share war stories from the home front, or I might post pictures of my dog. Mainly, though, it's a space for me to chronicle my attempts to bridge the traditionally incompatible categories of "mother" and "academic."
