Introduction | What can I say - I've been to a lot of rodeos. I'm a sociolinguist and internationally recognized thinker in the area of health literacy and public understanding of health and science. My singular focus - analyzing and closing the gaps between experts & lay knowledge. I'm really proud of the book I co-wrote with Dr. Andrew Pleasant, and mentor, Dr David Greer - Advancing Health Literacy: A Framework for Understanding and Action, which JEJM called "required reading" for public health communication professionals. I've taught for over 40 years - most recently was Professor of Linguistic Anthropology at Hunter College, CUNY. Prior to this she was Professor at the CUNY School of Public Health, and Assistant Professor, Mount Sinai School of Medicine. She had a long tenure on the faculty of Brown University Center for Environmental Studies. My longtime pet project is the healthliteracylab.com, an ever-expanding free library of communication and design lessons for health and safety professionals. And, on brave days, I'm writing a book, “The Simplicity Complex”, about the limits of simplifying complex information for the public. |
