Introduction	Dato' Dr Shaharil Talib is one of the leading historians of his generation. He has a long career with the University of Malaya, culminating in his appointment as Professor and Head of the Department of Southeast Asian Studies. In recognition of his international links he was appointed as the Executive Director of the University’s Asia-Europe Institute where he oversaw the development of innovative international postgraduate courses. In 2005, Dato’ Shaharil was appointed by the Attorney General of Malaysia to head the new Special Research Unit of his Chambers. He has taught and published in a broad range of subject areas including Terengganu and Kelantan’s experience of colonialism, the royal families of Southeast Asia and the state of contemporary historiography.
