Introduction | “ At the heart of any algorithm for comparing, recognising or classifying rhythms, lies a measure of the similarity between a pair of rhythms” Godfried Toussaint I am interested in the relationship between the strict, the continuous and the improvised developments of rhythm. My work derives from music in its simplest and most primitive form, although never relates directly to it. My practise predominantly stems from 2D illustrations, which I then translate into 3D sculptural installations. Through the repetitive nature of structural forms I question my understanding of line and structure.By following strict rules, my drawings and sculptures maintain a degree of order. This desire to have an element of control is demonstrated by the way in which we lead our lives, before the inevitable happens and a form of chaos enters the equation. The colour red is used in every sculptural installation I produce. It now provides me with a sense of security when producing a new sculptural installation however i am yet to fully understand its presence in my work. Timothy Pulleyn |
