| Interests | We met on an island on the west coast of Florida that sits in the middle of Pine Island Sound. Useppa is her name and she is surrounded by turquoise waters sparkling like dancing diamonds. No cars or shopping malls here. The sounds are nature’s orchestra … calls from ospreys to kingfishers, lapping waves in the background, gentle breezes blowing through palm trees like a four string quartet. We come from all over the world. We are both male and female. Ages range from under 30 to over 80. We are not exclusive but inclusive. We are a community and we are growing. We are the artists of Useppa Island. We meet once a week in each other’s homes. With doors wide open, all are welcome in. The coffee is always hot and our artisan bakers love sharing their talents. Everyone is greeted with a warm hello and encouraged to stay for awhile. Sitting quietly in the corner of the room, legs curled up underneath her in a comfy chair, a novelist savors the safety of this space as she edits and writes. On the porch with easels set up and colors being mixed, painters look out to sea. A conversation begins around the dining room table as fiber artists start their craft…. knitting, needlepoint, quilting, needle felting, and hand sewing. No limitations here. Another artist walks through the door with paper and pencil in hand. He takes a seat and sketches the bunny in front of him while talking about a coming community event we’re all involved in. Faint sounds of music are heard as a woman edits her photos to put them into a slide show presentation. Puppets made over the last few weeks watch it all from their corner. Whatever your talent or interest… words, paints, brushes, needles, plaster, a camera… we encourage each other. Come and join us. |
