Location United Kingdom
Introduction The aim of this blog is to give an account of what it's like to live in a small village in the South East of the UK, and of its extraordinary inhabitants – for most people are extraordinary in some way, and rarely in the way we first imagine. I am indebted to Mary Russell Mitford and her series of sketches, published in the early 19th Century as 'Our Village'. I see the present-day blog as a close approximation to the generally outmoded 'sketch' form that she used; themes in successive blogs can similarly build to form a rounded picture over time, yet each one brings a sense of lively immediacy to the reader. I have not identified the village or the characters used in this blog. The village is typical - certainly of most villages in the South East. The characters, and what happens to them, are fictionalised, built from merging and mixing essentially true observations. As Mary Mitford is reported as saying, "If anything be ugly you strike it out, or if anything be wanting, you put it in."
