| Introduction | From a fairly conventional middle-class, small town, Scottish background, where getting a good education and entering a profession was considered paramount. I towed the line, more or less, ending up a physicist working, first in industry, in London, then returning to a university research post for a short time before packing it in and 'dropping out' to become a writer of fiction. I moved to a village on the west coast of Scotland, and have been living here for the last twenty years. During that time I have done all sorts of work from waitressing, to computerising someone's business, all intended to fund my writing. About fifteen years ago, I cracked up and was diagnosed schizophrenic. However, the experience of psychosis just fed into my ongoing philosophical preoccupation with the nature of existence, and, in the end, led me to solve that problem.
