| Introduction | Personal Permaculture was taught to me young by the oak mother. Birth-mom ruled the house, but outside tucked into a ravine lived a giant oak with a vast base of eight massive divergent trunks. There, a barefooted mud-painted tribe of primitives roamed free in the shade of a mammoth oak. On some days I was their leader. I was four years old when my father built us the tree-fort. We played in it by day and slept in her arms on summer nights. Sleep would steal me briefly but the night would seduce me awake to keep it company. It was my favorite time and place, alone, just me, the tree and the beauty of the night. She’d teach me in the ways of trees, weave realities with delicate twig-fingers, and plant untold glistening star-acorns in my belly. By moonlight her wrinkled gray trunks looked warm and fleshed like elephant skin as she was there guiding me through time.
