| Introduction | Hereward Farm is located on 20 beautiful acres in McCalla, AL at the southern geographic terminus of the Appalachian Mountains near Tannehill Ironworks Historical State Park. This site was the birthplace of the Birmingham Iron and Steel District which became an important source of munitions for the Confederacy. Here the former owners, Sarah and Joe, operated Fig Leaf Farm, a certified organic farm supplying the needs of the local community.
It is our intention to continue Sarah and Joe's legacy of sustainability and establish Hereward Farm as a 21st century homestead emphasizing practical and sustainable self-sufficiency. This blog is our story of transitioning from busy executives in corporate America to a simpler, more sustainable lifestyle. One that learns from the past, is fully vested in the present, and serves as a model way of living for an uncertain future. So what about the name? Hereward Farm is named after Hereward The Wake, the last free Anglo-Saxon who continued to fight the Norman Invaders long after the death of King Harold, England's last Anglo-Saxon King, at the Battle of Hastings in 1066. |
