| Introduction | The information center acquires and catalogs both published and unpublished materials about the cryosphere. It contains over 44,000 monographs, serials, journal articles, reprints, videos, maps, atlases and CD-ROMs. We currently receive over 100 periodicals and newsletters relating to the cryosphere and to remote sensing of ice and snow. Material check-out is limited to NSIDC and CU-Boulder personnel, but items may be obtained by NOAA personnel through Interlibrary Loan. All others may visit the Center to use materials (M-F, 8-5). The analog archives collections document the history of science and exploration in cold regions. Included are materials from early expeditions to Alaska, the Alps, South and Central America, and Greenland; as well as the historical records of the World Data Center and NSIDC. Included are over 1400 maps, 8000 photographic prints, 1400 glass plate negatives, 1600 color slides, 7000 ice charts, and 38 cubic feet of manuscript materials. These materials do not circulate. The librarians offer reference services to all users of the library and archives materials, handling over 600 reference requests per year. For help, please email library@nsidc.org. |
