| Introduction | Awareness, education, and advocacy are essential to fighting stigma against Medication-assisted recovery, which has been at once the most effective and the most stigmatized treatment for opiate addiction for nearly 50 years. Opiate addiction is a chronic medical condition, not a choice, not a moral deficiency, and not a "spiritual void". Brave voices fight to end the 12-step stronghold on the field of substance abuse treatment, break down barriers, and bring evidence-based practice into the forefront of recovery. Effective treatments should not be accompanied by shame, secrecy, penalties, or condescendance. Shame has no place in recovery, and no patient should be made to feel ashamed for taking a life-saving medication. I urge you to join the fight for medication-assisted recovery; get educated, and get busy spreading truth. |
