Housing, work, family, all had to be re-invented. Courage and inspiration were in every heart. But the soul seeks meaning beyond the daily practicalities. The songs from the mountains, the seaside, the land, songs of love, patriotic songs, as well as the more classical opera arias and choruses, transmitted through the centuries from one generation to the next, echoed within one’s own silence, in the reality of the new land. The thought of reviving the childhood musical emotions became a reality when, in 1951, some of the hard-working pioneers joined voices in the hospitable Saint Francis House in the Valley. Six years later, the growing group of singers decided to incorporate under its present name, the Giuseppe Verdi Choral Society. Five members of that initial group of 24 men are still with the Choir. Most of the other founders have, alas, passed away. In the intervening years, many have joined and, alas, some have also passed away. . Doctor Castellano was the first Patron, and, many years after his passing away, he remains dearly missed. A visit by the Choir to Stanthorpe, in 1959, probably marks the first visit outside Brisbane, followed by many more in Queensland and in New South Wales. The Verdi Choir celebrates this year its 50th anniversary. This will culminate in a dinner-dance Concert to be held on Saturday 17 November 2007 at the Italo Australian Centre in New Market. During all these years the Choir has represented the voice and heart of the community, always ready to be there for those events of significance to the community. Thanks to the dedication of all its members, the Choir has brought to the whole community, the expression of the outstanding heritage embodied in the popular and classical music of Italy. |
