Obadiah Mead’s Jacket Reproduced
My blogs
| Introduction | In calibration with the Greenwich Historical Society Museum, Henry, Justin Squizzero’s The Burroughs’s Garrett, and assistance with Tyler Putnam’s research, there has been a tremendous amount of effort and work done to replicate the Obadiah Mead jacket as true as we can get to the original garment with the thread counts, dyes in the stripes, and color of the inside pocket. This project has been in the works since December 16th, 2020 at the annual Destruction of the Tea reenactment. It all began when I approached Henry and spoke about my strong desire and keen interest in replicating the Mead coat because it is a neat little article of clothing and I’ve admired it for years, but I wanted an actual reproduction, not just cloth that mimics it. As a dyer, I understand the water chemistry involved and the long and oftentimes challenging aspects of each historic dye needed to achieve any desirable depth of color. Weaving on the other hand is completely new to me, so it has been a very interesting learning experience on that front. This meant, I wanted to go back to the old ways: how garments were created back then. |
