| Introduction | We live in a time of immense challenges as well as unprecedented opportunities. Both challenge and opportunity are intimately connected to ongoing progress in science and technology. Thus we need to envision the world we want our children to live in, and then focus our creativity and technology to bring that world into being. As a scientist who has had a reasonably successful forty-year career at major research universities, I continue to be awed by the power of contemporary science and its potential for good. However, I am also a bit cynical about the way science is sometimes conducted and especially about the way it is often misinterpreted and misused in the larger society. Thus this blog will periodically deal with controversial policy issues at the interface between science, technology, the economy and society. |
