| Introduction | I am a UC Berkeley student who grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area. Due to the pervasive diversity of the area, immigrants have always played a central role in my life. During high school I felt a strong geographical and social separation between many of the area’s immigrant communities and my own suburban community. Intrigued, I took classes related to immigration at Berkeley. These classes - most notably Professor Harley Shakien’s “The Southern Border” and Professor Kirsten Sehnbruch’s “Employment Policy in Latin America” - coupled with community experiences such as tutoring immigrant children, confirmed my interest in the subject. To gain a more in depth perspective of the phenomenon, I took a semester leave of absence (Spring 08) to teach English in Ziquítaro. I also conducted research for a thesis. Currently I am coordinating the continuation of the classes from California while simultaneously working on turning the project into a non-profit organization. |
