Introduction I am a former English teacher, reporter, and newspaper columnist. These days, I write for sheer enjoyment ... and because I still have lots to say.
Interests Learning something new every day, reading, writing, trolling bookstores, coffee, Scrabble, poetry collections, music, religions, the afterlife, really good chocolate, really good bread pudding, caramel sauce, macaroni and cheese, motherhood, women's issues, kids' crafts, Pinterest, health, humor, cooking, reading about cooking, decorating magazines, women's magazines (MORE, Good Housekeeping, Family Circle), Victoriana, the Jolie-Pitts, Words with Friends, baseball, wit, wordplay, an idea when first grasped, lounging on my beloved front porch, blogging, puttering around the house listening to NPR, baking cookies and cakes, reminiscing about old loves/friendships, reading obituaries/"The universe is made of stories not of atoms."
Favorite Movies Romantic comedies; indie films, anything with Brad Pitt, Meryl Streep, or Holly Hunter.
Favorite Music Anything from Eminem to Ella Fitzgerald. I am a sucker for All Things Natalie Merchant.
Favorite Books To Kill A Mockingbird (I read it every year ~). I will read anyone's biography or memoir. Food memoirs are particularly fun (Laurie Colwin is the master). Anything funny draws me in: I love David Sedaris and Anne Lamott. When I am not reading nonfiction, which is most of the time, I prefer domestic fiction. If I ever meet Anne Tyler I can die happily. She is my literary role model. When I write, I imagine that she is my audience. I own every Tyler book ever published, but Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant remains my favorite.
