| Introduction | Karel Steenbrink (born Breda 1942) was a lifelong student of religions in Indonesia. His Ph.D was about pesantren, Islamic boarding schools in Indonesia (1974). Between 1981-1988 he lived in Jakarta and Yogyakarta teaching at what is now UIN, State Islamic University. In a later period he taught in Leiden and Utrecht University.
