Introduction	My coastal, south west facing garden in Devon is 120m above sea level and a mile inland across some fields, which leaves it exposed to the prevailing south-westerly winds. It's definitely the windiest place I've ever lived and although the climate is mild, the strong winds are plant bashers so gardening has a few challenges. The back garden is 30m x 8m with a side patch of 5m x 6m. It has some shelter on 3 sides from hedges and on the SW side from a 5ft fence. The soil in this part of Devon is free draining, slightly acid, loamy and low fertility. The subsoil is mainly Shale (a type of mudstone that is layered and splits).
