Introduction When I was eight I cajoled my mother into making me a bespoke Halloween costume for the school party. I wanted to be a pilgrim. That would have been an odd yet understandable choice if we’d lived in Salem, Massachusetts, but we lived in Honolulu. I trudged to school in 80° sunshine looking like an odd bod extra from Arthur Miller’s The Crucible. So that’s one reason for the blog title, but it also refers to the house beautiful in Pilgrim’s Progress. I’m seeking my house beautiful or even my house not so beautiful. Doesn’t matter as long as I own it. At heart I’m a maker, a builder, a fixer - talents I learned from my parents or taught myself (like basic lamp rewiring). I write on architecture, urban housing and design. I’m always keen to discuss a commission. I'm General Editor of Architecture: The Whole Story - for which I also wrote about 35,000 words - published September 2014. I’m a Contributing Editor of the quarterly design magazine COVER.
