| Introduction | On September 18, 2010 about 40 laity, clergy and community members of all denominations, met at Fourth UMC, 20 N. Lehman St., York, PA for their first Communities of Shalom training session. Communities of Shalom is based out of Drew University. It began in 1992 in the aftermath of the Los Angeles riots as a way for all communities urban and rural, to work together to solve problems peacefully and in unity. As a result of the training, we have developed 3 Shalom Sites in York City and 1 in Delta, PA. The three city sites are, the Far East Site, the Friendship Shalom Community (central York), and the West Side Shalom Community. Delta has done phenomenal work within their community already starting with a transitional housing program within their community! Each Shalom Site submitted a plan that states a vision, mission, goal setting, as well as assets and needs for their area. The plans are also to include economic development, healthcare, improving relationships and spiritual and congregational development. The most important thing will be to develop a cooperative working relationship with our neighbors. |
