Introduction In 2003, a mystery ailment hit like a Mack truck rendering it impossible for me to work. I became the iconic “hot potato” and spent years being tossed from one doctor to the next without finding any answers. I was told my only problem was that I had “high anxiety” and that my malady was “all in my head.” This, despite numerous inquiries of passers-by as to whether I was all right because I had turned grey. It took from 2004 until now to find the various specialized surgeons and physicians I needed to help me. It took every penny I had as well as your tax dollars through Medicare to reverse the damage perpetrated by private medical providers. We’ll never truly reform health care without shifting the paradigm to functional medical care, which seeks to delineate all that is wrong with the patient upfront, determines the underlying cause, and then prioritizes a common sense treatment plan of attack. I’d like to help by publicizing my story as representative of the silent majority of patients in the U.S. with chronic illness because they slipped through the health care cracks.
