| Introduction | My "travel bug" was come by honestly. My father was a world traveler, through his career in the navy, far beyond what one might have expected, coming from a long line of southern dirt farmers. He was in the far Western Pacific Ocean for several years before the attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941. The stories he could tell. My travels also began in the navy. I circumnavitaged the globe onboard the USS Wainwright, a fine looking guided-missle cruiser home ported in Charleston, South Carolina, but loaned out to the 7th Fleet during the Viet Nam War. We traveled all over Southeast Asia, West Africa, South America and the Carribbean. And then a number of years went by until one afternoon in early February, 1982, when I happened to ski down a long slope on the south side of the Matterhorn in the Swiss Alps, and entered for the first time, still on skis, a country that immediately, mysteriously, felt like a long lost home ... Italy. |
