| Introduction | I began my dental career as an associate in Salt Lake City, Utah before starting my own practice in May, 1979 in Kelso, WA. Exactly one year later Mt. St. Helens erupted, devastating the local economy. Fortunately, I was new to the area and my “glass” was just filling up at the time so in spite of the local economy, my “glass half full attitude” and proactive approach paid big dividends. Through consistent viral marketing and community involvement I was able to develop a strong brand for the practice that was highly recognizable in the community. My practice not only weathered the ups and downs of the local economy but flourished. I have always been fascinated with the business aspects of the practice of dentistry. I have always believed that profitable dental practices were those which were closely aligned with proven business practices. I recently completed an MBA degree and as I studied success businesses, my beliefs were confirmed. The successful business practices that I used in my practice were indeed the same one used by successful businesses. |
