Introduction I have a strong startle reflex. Any sudden noise makes me jump and sends what feels like an electrical current down my spine. Such a reflex is a sure and certain sign of serious physical abuse when I was a child. The stronger the reflex, the more abuse was suffered. Film is a powerful medium. Another result of the physical abuse I suffered is my inability to sit through a movie in which a child or an animal is threatened, in which death threatens or occurs, or in which physical violence, adultery or abandonment take place. Yes, when newly adopted at the age of eight, that included “Bambi” and “Snow White” I have learned I must watch only happy movies and cartoons. Many in the US still believe that adoptive relationships are inferior to biological ones. Abraham Lincoln did not believe that. Nor did the French essayist Michel de Montaigne nor did Boethius the author of the classic, The Consolation of Philosophy. Nor did Henry Morton Stanley, the Africa Explorer. They and many others found an adoptive relationship in their lives that was more powerful than their biological ones. So did I. It is one of the subjects I address in my blogs.
