| Inleiding | Iris Low is a visual artist, Born in The Netherlands. Her father, Leo Mes was also a visual artist and she grew up learning about art and its applications in the European classical tradition. Iris’ work focuses on two things: the brush stroke and the visualization of a meditation called Mindfulness that has helped her during bouts of mental illness. She intuitively applies paint in thick strokes; it tells the story of the emotions she is experiencing as well as the world around her. Colour is the expression of the emotion, the movement is the changing of the mindset, of moods. Inspired by pointillism and colour fields, she looks for the effect of colours on each other during the process. Iris struggles with Chronic Depression. Her art expresses the feelings experienced during bouts of depression and remission. She strives to communicate the feelings of one who is mentally ill, while allowing hope and joy to shine through. She works to diminish the stigma associated with mental illness. There is beauty in the struggle to obtain light while in darkness. She is inspired by such artists as van Gogh, Rothko, and de Kooning. Running the gamut from impressionism to abstract modernism. |
