| Introduction | My name is Julian Williams, I was born in 1953 and live in Pembrokeshire. Whilst it is true that we all have separate and individual bodies it is an illusion to think that our minds are individual. John Donne was right, no man is an island entire unto himself. Thoughts, like language, only exist through their connection the culture around us. The culture is created by the minds we mingle and mix with. Art is something that is happening all the time, and is innate. We are all artists and we are all connected with each other through Art. Art lives in that area of betweeness, and our thoughts and ideas are never our own. For these reasons I reject the meme that there is such a thing as modern art, or progress in art. There is good art and bad art, just like there are good thoughts and bad thoughts. There is insightful art and low art, just like there are new and hackneyed ideas. The modern suggestion that artists should define their individuality, or are in competition with each other, does not make sense to me either. Or that an artists has ownership of their "art". Art cannot be owned, it is always a shared endevour. |
