Favorite Movies Not a big movie fan. but I do like some old classics and some art type films. I find many movies upsetting, but I'll brave it to watch movies with family, especially if they preview them for me. Recent family favorites are Babette's Feast, Lord of the Rings, and the Harry Potter films.
Favorite Music I'm still working on this section, and it's a moving target. It's hard to know where to start-- I have very eclectic tastes in music. Genres: I like things that cannot be classified, and hope one day more music will transcend the tyranny of Genre. I'm mostly listening to classical, and mostly playing Jazz (bebop, cool, swing, straight ahead, and bosa), new acoustic, folk, bluegrass, and Celtic. Composers: Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, Chopin, Schumann, Barber, Debussy, Revel, Bartok, Edger Meyer, Chris Thile. Too many to list. I may flush this out later. Players: Glen Gould, Murray Perahia, Emanuel Ax, Van Cliburn, Chris Thile, Edger Meyer, Hillary Hahn, Tim O'brian, Stuart Duncan, Jerry Douglas, Ron Block. I've really been enjoying MSU faculty and student pianists lately. I have way too many favorite players to list! Groups: New Acoustic (Punch Brothers), Bluegrass (Hot Rise, Nashville Bluegrass Band, O'Boys), Irish (Solas), Pop (Ben Folds, Radio Head).
Favorite Books Anything by George MacDonald and much of C.S. Lewis, especially his theology and the Space Trilogy. Tolkien, of course. Samuel Clemons, Arther Conan Doyle, J.K Rolling. I'm currently reading Russian classics for the first time and really enjoying them. All of Dorothy Sayers, Lord Peter Whimsey, but also her theological works are very profound and hitting home. The Supper of the Lamb by Capon is fantastic!
