Introduction I'm a member of whedonesque, a feminist and long-time activist. I'm one of many folks that are either increasing or beginning "enlightened activity" to create gender equality for women in particular, and disenfranchised humanity in general. Our mission statement is in Joss' May 20th whedonesque post. "I am Dua Khalil" fundraising campaign and artwork was created by lexigeek, from an idea by Dale Koontz. Some blog color suggestions came from Numfar PTB and Tonya J.
Interests "If you have any doubts that we live in a society controlled by men - try reading down the index of contributors to a volume of quotations looking for women's names." - Elaine Gill | "Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. Hate multiplies hate, violence multiplies violence, and toughness multiplies toughness in a descending spiral of destruction... The chain reaction of evil - hate begetting hate, wars producing more wars - must be broken, or we shall be plunged into the dark abyss of annihilation." -- Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., in his "I Have A Dream" speech, delivered on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. on August 28, 1963 | "The history of progress is written in the blood of men and women who have dared to espouse an unpopular cause, as, for instance, the black man’s right to his body, or woman’s right to her soul." - Emma Goldman | "I don’t know what immutable differences exist between men and women apart from differences in their genitals; perhaps there are some other unchangeable differences; probably there are a number of irrelevant differences. But it is clear that until social expectations for men and women are equal, until we provide equal respect for both men and women, our answers to this question will simply reflect our prejudices." - Naomi Weisstein | “Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers.” - UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights | "My deepest impulses are optimistic, an attitude that seems to me as spiritually necessary and proper as it is intellectually suspect." - Ellen Willis | "As I stood before the gates I realized that I never want to be as certain about anything as were the people who built this place."- Rabbi Sheila Peltz, on her visit to Auschwitz
Favorite Books "All political movements are like this - we are in the right- everyone else is in the wrong. The people on our own side who disagree with us are heretics, and they start becoming enemies. With it comes an absolute conviction of your own moral superiority. There's oversimplification in everything and a terror of flexibility." - Doris Lessing |"Freedom to think our own thoughts, freedom to utter them, freedom to live out the promptings of our inner life... was termed a monstrosity of the 19th century. What was it?—the legitimate out-birth of the eternal law of progress. This reformation underlies every other; it is the only healthful centre around which hope of humanity can revolve." - Harriot K. Hunt
