| Introduction | The Illini 4000 for Cancer is student-led non-profit organization that sends a team of 25 college students across the United States each summer to raise $100,000 for the American Cancer Society. From May to August 2008 the Illini 4000 Bike America team will ride from New York City to Seattle; en route the team will speak at community centers and houses of worship about their mission and steps individuals can take to live cancer-free. In addition, riders interview cancer patients and survivors and record their stories as part of the Portraits Project, a program created by the Illini 4000 to document cancer’s influence on American life in the 21st century. While the Illini 4000 is headquartered at the University of Illinois, this one-of-a-kind experience is open to all college students who are interested in making a different in the fight against cancer.
