| Introduction | I got my first art award in kindergarden-I drew horses better than my teacher as my dad proudly recalled. I was always the class artist, something I didn't appreciate since I did not want to stand out. By junior high in Rockford, Il., I was recommended by a private art instructor to Thomas Kapsalis of the Art Institute of Chicago, since our family was moving back to Chicago. Prof. Kapsalis made recommenda- tions to my parents and looked out for me when I was accepted to the Art Institute. I was the first in my family to go to college and Prof. Kapsalis' mentorship was invaluable. In 2005, Kapsalis (long retired) and I, along with a number of alumni, were featured together in a national drawing survey. This makes me smile.
