| Introduction | My name is Bob and I’m a pancreatic cancer survivor. Through the grace and mercy of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and the courage and strength I’ve drawn from Him, I’ve been able cherish each new day since my diagnosis in late 2008. Since I underwent the pancreaticoduodenectomy (Whipple) surgical procedure to remove the cancer, I’ve had almost 1,000 tomorrows to be thankful for. I’ve thought about courage and fortitude a lot over the last 2 years. I’ve faced mortal danger and undertaken many paths in life that required courage. I served in the Air Force for 20 years, ran half marathons up Pikes Peak, completed the most difficult college degrees in the field of engineering, put my life on the line as a police officer, and served in security details to protect 2 U.S. presidents. However, those experiences didn’t begin to prepare me for the toughest battle in my life so far – a battle against an adversary with a track record that has remained largely unchanged for the last 40 years – pancreatic cancer. Along the way, I discovered a source of strength in God that I had never truly drawn from, and I gained a tremendous insight into the battle that cancer victims face every day. |
